Albarosa Guest House

← Back to the Portfolio

Although I inherited this project, which was originally designed by someone else to be a timber clad structure, it is well worth mentioning on my site.  Because the building is situated in the historic core of Stellenbosch, and because the original structure is well over 60 years of age, the project was subject to a series of additional heritage applications, which I conducted.  Because the ‘powers that be’ refused the foreign timber building methods in the sacred historical core, we also had to do some redesigning to be more traditional and to fit in with the surroundings.

The project was an addition to an existing outbuilding. We converted it from a staff quarters to additional guest suites, plus a two bedroomed flat for the use of the Italian owner, for when he and his family visits. We added 106 m2 to an outbuilding of 65m2.
